Uncontrollable blinking treatment has been developed to help patients relax their eye muscles and to have normal eyesight. The problem with Blepharospasm or uncontrollable blinking of the eyes is that it affects the eyesight of the individual. Blurry or distorted vision may be experienced because of this.
Currently, there is no known uncontrollable blinking treatment that can cure this condition permanently. The treatments are there to only reduce the severity of the muscle spasms around the eyes.
Uncontrollable Blinking Treatment Options
Prescription medicines that can be taken by mouth can be given to patients with mild uncontrollable blinking. The results are usually unpredictable and temporary. The symptoms usually come back especially if medication is stopped.
Myectomy can be done to remove some of the muscles and nerves that control the eyelids. This uncontrollable blinking treatment is preferred since it is reported to have improved the symptoms for up to 85% of patients.
Botox have been used since the late 1980's as an uncontrollable blinking treatment. Botox is the purified form of botulinum toxin-A which is a toxin derived from Clostridium botulinum. Botox injections can relieve the muscle spasms temporarily for up to 8 months. Re-injection is needed to prolong the relaxing of eye muscles.
Alternative uncontrollable blinking treatments can also help relieve the patient. Biofeedback, hypnosis, chiropractic, nutritional therapy and acupuncture may be administered to temporarily relieve the eye muscles from twitching due to spasms.
Alternative uncontrollable blinking treatments have not been proven effective, but some patients may find relief by doing so.
