Botox has been approved by the FDA as treatment for Hyperhidrosis in 2004. Excessive sweating therapy using Botox has proven positive results compared to other topical solutions for this type of medical condition.
Excessive sweating therapy is fast and efficient. It is long-lasting than most topical medications and solutions in the market today.
Botox blocks the stimulation of the nerve endings in the armpits to stop the sweat glands from releasing sweat. The nerve endings release acetylcholine that triggers the sweat glands whenever it is stimulated by certain factors such as stress, anxiety, increase in body temperature due to activities, and others.
Excessive Sweating Therapy: How is it done?
The principle of administering Botox on to the armpit skin is similar to its cosmetic counterpart. However, the special injection needle only penetrates under the skin and very minute drops are injected.
Around 20 injections are made on each armpit. The procedure only takes 5 to 15 minutes and the patient can go home afterwards. There is no need for recovery time since normal routines won't be affected after the treatment.
It has been reported that 90% of the sweating is decreased within the first 48 hours after the excessive sweating therapy. For some patients, their underarm odors also vanish due to the treatment.
The effect of excessive sweating therapy may last around 6 to 10 months. Side effects may include minute bruises and pinching pain on the injected areas; these, however, fade in a few days. Temporary weakening of the armpit muscles and numbness may also occur to some patients, but they may fade over time.
Excessive sweating therapy on the palms can also be administered. However, this type of treatment is more painful and can cause weakening of the palm muscles. These side effects are quite common to this type of excessive sweating therapy.
